QUADRA ISLAND ARTISTS

There are more than 120 artist resident on Quadra Island. Most of these artists are listed in the Quadra Island Arts Directory. A number of these artists have their own web site and e-mail address. About 30 artists open their studio on the first week end of June for the Annual Quadra Island Studio Tour each year. Furthermore a large number studios are open year round.

 

PAINTERS

Alex Bazarin A gallery of figurative art - spiritual, fantastic and surreal paintings by a unique artist, born in Russsia in 1963. Alex Bazrin took his training at the Art College in St.Petersburg and became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia in 1992.One can see St.Petersburgs town-scapes in many of his paintings. However, St.Petersburg is a miracle city - a mirage. St Petersburgit was constructed on poisoned marshes by Peter the Great 300 years ago.The impact of that decission, the events of the last World War, as well as the political changes in Russia are forces that should be of concern to all of us.

Darlene Gait - Native Canadian Artist: Distinguished and inspired painter well known for her images of wildlife and North West landscapes from a Coast Salish cultural perspective. Her art reflects her passion and beliefs in the unity of hummanity, respect for its diversity and the sacredness of creation. Ms. Gait shares her talent for story telling, so natural to First Nation peoples, through her images and poetry.

Pnina Granirer Pnina Granirer is an accomplished artist living in Vancouver, BC. Ted Lindberg's book "Pnina Granierer: Portrait of an Artist" (Ronsdale Press) gives a full account of Pnina's life. Both Pnina and I showed our art work at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver in the fall of 2000 and I'm happy to have one of her paintings from "The Dancer Series" hanging in our home now.

Suzana Stojanovic Suza a painter of the magical world of horses. She was born in Vranje, Serbia in 1969.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Blair Polischuk Blair and his wife Cathy have been friends of the family for a long time we skied many runs in Whistler. During some conversation it turned out that Blair was also an undiscovered photographer. Thus he became one of the founding members of the annual “Art in the Garden” exhibitions in Whistler that started in 1996. Since then he has made his name in Canada.<www.silverworkstudio.ca>

Michael Binkley
Mike and my life's travel are intertwined for many years. His parents are friends of my
family for nearly fifty years. We had influences on each other and exchanged ideas for
many years. Mike was instrumental to start carving again (my second period).

Sandy Cline Sandy Cline and his brother Daniel Cline are both carvers of beautiful sculptures. Sandy lives in Ontario, where he works and teaches. He has a very informative web site which leads to many sources, tools and general information as well as to other carvers.While Daniel Cline has his studio in Chemainus. BC

Jean Doyle Bronze Sculptures by South African artist Jean Doyle include African and female figures, miniature bronze and lifesize bronze sculptures.

Paul Martin
Paul is really a frustrated Architect who started sculpturing his sensual art in a unique
fashion. Some of his sculptures are exceedingly erotic but always represent a deep and
honest feeling of a man’s true emotions, not sanctioned by the church, but which one finds in abundance on Hindu temples.

 

Maarten Schaddelee

Maarten resides with his family in Victoria BC. He lives in a house which displays his fabulous sculptures and he is surrounded by a garden of maginficient design. Some of his work is on permanent display at Painters Lodge, Campbell River and April Point Lodge, Quagra Island, BC.

 

Shane Smith Is a sculptor, who does some very beautiful work and has a very informative web site. We have been communicating since 1998 when I put my fingers on a computer key board for
the first time and browsed the web.

Francisco Sotomayor
Francisco is a self-taught artist who does oil paintings, pencil drawings and carves in wood
and marble. He is an advocate of realism. His exquisite collection of life size marble
sculptures remind me of Michelangelo.

The Sculptors' Society of BC.

The Sculptors' Society of British Columbia is a unique but small group of sculptors who have their own website. The members offer many styles and techniques from realism, impressionism to abstract working and experimenting with materials on the cutting edge. Throughout the Sculptors' Society of British Columbia's history (early 1970th)," very important values and standards have been adhered to. A high standard of excellence, integrity, professionalism and concern for public education and communication are the major criteria of the society"

 

Caesare Umbertino Caesar Umbertino is a highly acclaimed Canadian artist. His work is known and admired in Canada and the United States. His larger sculptures are located in open public places. There is something impressive in his work.
